A Smarter Way To Travel: Official launch is scheduled for April 2008.
A/C Magazine will include featured articles on commuting modes, schedules, travel plans, reviews, TOD Communities, and areas to visit along the commuter routes. Commuter rail, car share, car pooling, bus and bike commuting are being improved in the city and will provide commuters alternate modes of travel.
AustinCommuter.com Magazine is dedicated to educating the public on alternative commuting options available in the greater Austin area and promote the use of these publicly funded transportation systems to reduce the number of single occupant vehicles on the region’s roads and highways for the purpose of conserving fuel, reducing air pollution and making it easier for commuters to travel to and from work and school Some priorities of the city are to reduce traffic congestion in the city, Interstate 35, improve air quality and implement maximum use of land for developments thru mixed-use projects and Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) to prevent future sprawling. As the Austin area continues to grow in population, it is imperative for commuters to take advantage of these cost effective transit modes being improved and developed by the City of Austin and Capital Metro.
Commuter rail is Austin's key to smart growth and new pedestrian friendly communities. The city of Austin and Capital Metro are currently constructing a $90 million commuter rail system connecting Leander to Downtown Austin with 9 rail stations that will serve as transit stations for rail, buses and streetcars. Capital Metro is introducing Capital Metro Rail, Capital Metro Rapid, Street Cars and constructing Bike Paths as part of the All Systems Go commuter project approved by the citizens of Austin. Rail services are scheduled to begin in mid to late 2008. Soon, commuters will have several options available to travel to and from work without having to drive their cars. Austin has finally stepped into the mainstream of cost effective commuter travel that many big cities have been executing for years successfully. Texas Commuter Rail Success Story
The Dallas commuter rail (D.A.R.T.) when first introduced faced much of the same opposition as Austin commuter rail faces now from public officals and citizens. It was finally approved and construction began in 1996. Today, over 60,000 commuters use the commuter rail daily. Thru educating the public and providing cost effective commuter travel, the Dallas commuter rail continues to grow in ridership. Recently, funds were allocated for an extention of the commuter rail to other parts of the Dallas area. That is alot of cars off the road! For more info visit www.dart.org
Austin is still young enough population wise to establish effective commuting systems that can decrease the use of vehicles on the road and remain proactive before a commuting crisis occurs as the population increases.
TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT is the exciting new fast growing trend in creating vibrant, livable communities. Also known as Transit Oriented Design, or TOD, it is the creation of compact, walkable communities centered around high quality train systems. This makes it possible to live a higher quality life without complete dependence on a car for mobility and survival. It consists of a mixed-use community that includes retail, commerical, and dense housing (condos, townhomes, apartments, and single family homes) all in one location. There are many examples of this successful type of development in Cities across the World. New York City, Atlanta, Dallas, San Francisco, Tokyo, London, and Munich are some examples of successful TODs. Austin will soon be added to the list of successful TODs.
The city of Austin and Capital Metro have approved six of the nine rail stations to be dense transit oriented developments. These developments will improve current neighborhood communities, increase property values and offer residents a variety of services. Our portfolio of community based websites listed below will be developed into targeted informational websites that will include; Commuting solutions and education, Home and Office Real Estate, Restuarants, Hotels, and Shopping. These websites will become the community hubs for all developments around each of Austin's commuter rail stations as shown below.
